Freelancer Onboarding Flow

Overview

Lancers' freelancer registration had a high drop-off rate — many new users abandoned the process before completing their profiles, which directly impacted the platform's ability to match clients with qualified talent. A complete profile is the single biggest predictor of a freelancer's success on the platform.

I led a UX redesign of the entire onboarding flow, from initial sign-up through profile completion, with the goal of reducing friction and guiding new freelancers to a "match-ready" state as quickly as possible.

Process

• Funnel analysis — Mapped the existing registration funnel step by step, identifying exactly where users dropped off. The biggest losses occurred at the skill selection and portfolio upload stages.
• User interviews — Conducted interviews with recently registered freelancers (both those who completed and abandoned profiles) to understand their motivations, frustrations, and mental models around profile creation.
• Competitive benchmarking — Studied onboarding flows from Upwork, Fiverr, and CrowdWorks to identify patterns that reduced friction: progressive disclosure, social proof, and smart defaults.
• Flow redesign — Restructured the onboarding into a guided, step-by-step experience with a progress indicator, contextual tips, and the option to skip non-essential steps and return later.
• Prototyping & testing — Built an interactive prototype in Figma and tested with 8 participants. Iterated on confusing labels, step ordering, and the portfolio upload experience based on feedback.

Results

The new onboarding flow launched and delivered measurable improvements:

• Profile completion rate increased significantly, with more freelancers reaching "match-ready" status within their first session
• Drop-off at the skill selection step was reduced by introducing smart suggestions based on job category selection
• Time-to-complete decreased as the progressive flow let users focus on one task at a time
• Qualitative feedback from new users highlighted the guided experience as feeling "clear and encouraging" compared to the previous form-heavy approach
